sheriff logoUPDATE: WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/8/19) — Webster County Sheriff Frankie Springfield has released the names of the couple involved in a fatal collision that happened approximately 4:15 p.m. Sunday in Slaughters.

James “Jim” King, 83, and his wife, Carolyn King, 78 of Slaughters, were pronounced deceased at the scene, where a train collided into the back driver’s side of the vehicle as it was crossing the tracks along Kentucky 138, Springfield reported this afternoon.

The sheriff said James King was driving west on Kentucky 138 and attempted to go across the railroad tracks.

A train was stopped on the switch tracks facing south, Springfield said. James drove around the crossarm and failed to see the oncoming northbound train. The CSX train traveled several feet before it was able to stop, and the vehicle was pushed to the west side of the track. No one on the locomotive was injured.

Springfield indicated the collision is still under investigation. That section of the highway was closed approximately four hours Sunday. The last fatal train crash happened about a decade ago at the Sebree Springs Park crossing along U.S. 41.

Webster County Coroner Todd Vanover, Webster County EMS, Slaughters Fire Department and Kentucky State Police assisted.
