Vernie AshbyWESTMINSTER, Md. — Vernie Dorville Ashby, 90, of Westminster, Md., died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Carroll Hospital.  Born Nov. 5, 1925, in McHenry, Ky., he was the son of the late Frances Lorene James and Vernie E. Ashby. He was the husband of the late Fonda Midkiff Ashby. 

Before retiring he worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Guam.  Upon returning from the war he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Kentucky State College and later a Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina. 

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Ronald G. and Carolyn J. Ashby, of Westminster; grandchildren, Stephen Ashby, Kathleen Davis and husband Nicholas, Benjamin Ashby and wife, Christina, and Shaun Ashby.  He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Ashby; a brother, Charles Ashby; and a sister, Mary Rodig. 

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Westminster Ridge, 505 High Acre Dr., Westminster.  Inurnment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford, Ky.
