Beaver Dam City Council 3 2016BEAVER DAM, Ky. (3/31/16) — The Beaver Dam City Commission held a special-called meeting to raise sewer rates, but after discovering discrepancies, decided to hold off for now.

At its March 14 meeting, the Beaver Dam City Commission approved the first reading of a sewer rate increase. The ordinance, after approval of the second reading, would raise the sewer rates of Beaver Dam water customers 22 percent.

For several years, the city has subsidized the sewer payment to the Ohio County Regional WasteWater Plant with money from its reserves fund.

A water rate study, conducted by Kentucky Rural Water, recommended the city raise its sewer rate 20 to 22 percent to break even on its payments to the Regional Wastewater Plant.

After several failed attempts to get the Regional Wastewater Board to lower its rate, the city commission saw no choice but to raise the city sewer rates.

The commission approved the first reading of the Sewer Rate Ordinance and called a special meeting on March 21 with the anticipation of approving the second reading.

During the meeting, the city commission also received an overview of its Fiscal Year 2014-2015 audit. This led to the review of past audits. Over the past several years, the city’s audits showed a loss on sewer operations, but not as large as the water rate study from KRW showed.

After further discussion, the commission decided to table the second reading of the ordinance until it contacted KRW about the discrepancies.

Whatever the outcome, it appears the city will still be raising sewer rates. At this point, the amount of the rate increase remains unknown.
