national office furnitureFRANKFORT, Ky. (3/29/16) – Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary Derrick Ramsey today announced that the National Office Furniture in Fordsville has been recertified into the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Deputy Secretary Mike Nemes was on hand today to congratulate employees on behalf of Sec. Ramsey.

“National Office Furniture is only one of three companies in Kentucky to have multiple facilities certified in SHARP,” Sec. Ramsey said. “That is the kind of dedication that I want to highlight for other businesses in the state who seek SHARP status. Accordingly, I wish to thank the employees of National Office Furniture-Fordsville who show up to work every day with a safety-first mentality and are the reason they remain among the elite SHARP workforces in Kentucky. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work.”

Both National Office Furniture locations in Kentucky – Fordsville and Danville – are recognized as being only two of 23 businesses in Kentucky to receive this distinction out of 115,000 eligible business establishments throughout the state.

Following Secretary Ramsey’s remarks, National Office Furniture Director of Safety, Vince Cooke, thanked the employees of the Fordsville facility for their contribution toward achieving this status.

“At National, we strive for an injury-free working environment for our people,” Cooke said. “National has always had a deep commitment to health and safety, and we continue to build on that commitment. From our guiding principles, we know that ‘our employees are the company’ and are our most valuable asset. Over the last 12 years at our Fordsville location, injuries have been reduced by 97 percent, – from 16 in 2004 to only one in 2015.”

Sen. C.B. Embry (R-Morgantown) also offered his praise.

“I am proud to offer my congratulations to the diligent men and women at the National Office Furniture location in Fordsville for their commitment to provide a safe and healthy working environment. This award is well-deserved, and I applaud this company for their continual dedication to the well-being of their employees.”

SHARP Awards are based on the Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) On-site Consultation Program which provides free and confidential safety and occupational health advice to small and medium-sized businesses across the country. While companies must meet the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Program (KYOSH) standards for the program, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet, including the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Division of Education & Training, certifies the achievement. Kentucky has operated its own federally-approved Occupational Safety and Health program for more than 40 years.

KYOSH consultants work with employers to identify workplace hazards, provide advice on compliance with OSHA standards, and assist in establishing injury and illness prevention programs. Priority is given to high-hazard worksites in industries such as manufacturing and construction.

In addition to being exempted from KYOSH programmed inspections, SHARP certification enables companies to save money by reducing workers’ compensation, medical, training, and other costs associated with injuries and illnesses.
