M Chamber 1MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (1/14/20) — Greater Muhlenberg Chamber of Commerce met at Felix E. Martin Hall Thursday for the January meeting. Outgoing president Jessica Browning passed the gavel to Tammy Piper, newly elected president for 2020. The new board was sworn in by Muhlenberg District Judge Brian Wiggins.

Piper announced mayors of Muhlenberg County guest speakers including Drakesboro Mayor Mike Jones.

MC 2Jones presented the state of affairs for the city of Drakesboro and in his opening remarks acknowledged the ongoing and necessary improvements to the gas plant, explaining that it was very important to the city and community at large in order to support a high-pressure plant.

“We are in the process of selling alcohol, and selling it on Sundays,” Jones said. “A lot of people don’t realize that’s available, and while It’s controversial in Muhlenberg County, it’s already helped us, and will help us in the coming year.”

MC 3Greenville Mayor Jan Yonts took the podium next to offer a run-down of things happening in her city.

“We are trying to get a new water plant, and it’s not coming without challenges; we wanted an additional water storage facility in Muhlenberg county, were something to happen to the other source in the county. “We’ve made improvements to our city parks, our city pool has a new slide, we’re converting a tennis court into a futsal court. We have a new city administrator, new fire chief and new street department supervisor.”

She concluded her speech by sharing ideas she learned recently at conference, alluding to “ways to kill your city”, in hope of shining a light on ways to avoid doing just that.
