Travis MDRAKESBORO, Ky. (12/4/19) — The Merle Travis Birthday Miners Strawberries and Cornbread Supper along with a Merle Travis Guitar Picking Party is happening Saturday at Drakesboro City Hall.

Doors open at 2 p.m. and dinner will be served around 5 p.m. that includes picking throughout the afternoon and evening, organizers said. Admission to the event is free that is offering some of the finest thumb pickers in the country.

The legendary artist was born Nov. 29, 1917 in southern Muhlenberg County, and is best known for penning the songs, “Dark as a Dungeon,” “Sixteen Tons” and the creator of his very own thumb picking technique that is copied by many guitar players. A park was named after Travis in Drakesboro.

The Country Music Hall of Fame icon died Oct. 20, 1983.

Visitors are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.
