Bobby VeachISLAND, Ky. (3/26/19) — Island Mayor Vicki Hughes will present a key to the city to the family of the late Bobby Veach as part of a mission to see Veach inducted into the Baseball of Hall of Fame.

Veach, who was born in 1888 and grew up in Island, was a Major League Baseball player who was an outfielder for 14 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Washington Senators. The key to the city presentation will be made at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at the Island Ball Field. The event is free and open to the public.

Scott Hillard, a Friends of Island organizer, said Veach’s image is part of a historical mural the organization had commissioned a couple years ago and now the town is hoping to help Veach’s family see the legendary player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Hillard said Veach lived in Hopkins County for three years and eventually moved to Illinois but always returned to Island for visits.

Veach held numerous records, said Hillard, including being the only player to ever pinch hit for Babe Ruth.
