Comer 2 25

WASHINGTON, D.C. (2/26/20) — United Mine Workers of America recognized U.S. Rep James Comer for his legislative efforts to save the healthcare and retirement benefits of many Kentucky coal miners and their families, according to a press release.

Matt Smith, Comer's spokesman, reported the congressman strongly supported legislation to shore up the 1974 United Mine Workers of America Pension Plan, which was passed and signed into law at the end of last year.

Comer received the award from United Mine Workers of America in his Washington office Tuesday.
“I have always been a major champion of the coal industry, which was built by the miners who dedicated years of labor to mining coal in western Kentucky," Comer said in a statement. "While President Obama’s War on Coal unfortunately devastated many western Kentucky communities, it was critically important for this safety net to be in place to provide financial security for our miners. I’m grateful to the United Mine Workers for recognizing my work to fight for their interests, and I look forward to continuing to strongly support the coal industry in future years."
After meeting with Comer, UMWA representatives presented him with an award for his support of the Bipartisan American Miners Act of 2019. The legislation protects the pension benefits of many Kentucky miners and their families while also extending health insurance benefits to those impacted by recent bankruptcies within the coal industry.
