MLK 2HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (1/17/20) — The 38th Annual Ecumenical Celebration honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King celebration is set for Saturday at Byrnes Auditorium, 750 Laffoon St. in Madisonville.

This year’s theme is titled, “Fulfilling the Dream through Faith, Community and Education,” local MLK Day events coordinator Tim Thomas reports.

Keynote Speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Kilen K. Gray, senior pastor of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Shelbyville. Gray, a Memphis, Tennessee native, also serves as Dean of Student Engagement for Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, is commissioner of the Kentucky African-American Heritage Commission and participates in other distinctive community service programs.

Special song and dance will be presented onstage to honor King during the ceremony. The 50 Voice Ladies of Praise Mass Choir of Evansville, Indiana, is set to fill the auditorium with amazing and spiritual music.

In addition, Hopkins County Schools plan to present the winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2020 Essay/Visual Arts Contest. The Dr. King Educator of the Year award will also be announced along with the Madisonville Community College MLK Scholarship recipients.

Other upcoming events scheduled this month include an MLK commemorative wreath-laying ceremony 10 a.m. Monday at the Larry Carney Center off Martin Luther King Way in Madisonville. Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton is slated to deliver the annual King Day Address followed by a sermon from keynote speaker Rev. Robert F. Boone. Music will be presented by Madisonville North Hopkins High School Chorus, Community Male Choir of Hopkins County and Hopkins County Central High School Music Director Tracy Bean.

The wreath placement ceremony will be followed by a special program to honor King 1:30 p.m. at Brighton Cornerstone Healthcare facility, 55 E. North St. in Madisonville, featuring the notable Tim Thomas, Community Improvement Foundation president.
