citycouncilmeeting goldMADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/19/19) — Madisonville City Council and Mayor Kevin Cotton announced the city has been awarded Kentucky Transportation Cabinet funds of $800,000 to complete the design and construction of an at-grade crossing along the Connector Road.

The funds are secure as long as the city proceeds with right-of-way procedures with CSX, which has agreed to allow the city to cross its railway to eventually connect the Mid Town Commons area with Island Ford Road.

The announcement was made during a special council/town hall meeting held Monday night at Hopkins County Career and Technical Center.

The previous city administration under Mayor David Jackson allocated $400,000 for engineering services for the at-grade crossing last year. During a June, 2018 council meeting, KYTC District 2 Chief Engineer Deneatra Henderson said the Mid Town Commons Road project was not a priority in the state’s highway plan among road and bridge projects, saying KYTC could not guarantee the $1.4 million funding would be available to complete the project. Henderson did point out that the $400,000 commitment would give the city “more of a chance to move forward” on the project, pending leftover or available funds.

American Engineers Inc. was awarded the bid earlier this year. Madisonville City Engineer Eric Hickman explained during Monday’s meeting the engineering services should cost around $200,000 for the immediate at-grade crossing plans, which will be initiated first.

The initial design included drainage, final right-of-way plans, construction as well as traffic control.

The city is another step closer to connect the north-south corridor off I-69.
