(1/24/20) — Owensboro Art Guild reports artists from Kentucky and surrounding states will compete for more than $3,500 in Purchase and Merit Awards during the Owensboro Art Guild’s 58th Annual Juried Exhibition, scheduled at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Feb. 29-April 24.

An opening reception is scheduled at the museum 8-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, where awards will be presented.          

More than 150 entries in the exhibition are expected, which will be juried by Jon Siau. Siau received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Evansville, and upon graduating, began a 42 year career as an art educator at Evansville North High School. Watercolor, drawing, and printmaking are his preferred media. He has been commissioned to create portraits and illustrations for such celebrities as Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, The Judds, Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Yogi Berra; and  U.S. Olympic Committee.

In addition to jurying the entries and selecting merit award winners, Siau will also designate a pool of works to be considered for Purchase Awards by local sponsors.

Additional public events planned at the museum in conjunction with this exhibition include DEMO DAY, Sunday, March 15, an afternoon of demonstrations and talks by selected artists juried into the exhibition. ARTBREAK, a March 31-April 3 art camp for children ages 6 to 16 is scheduled to coincide with Spring Break and will be led by artists featured in the exhibition. The camp will offer instruction in media and techniques utilized by the artists. Both events will be offered free to the public through the sponsorship of Owensboro Grain Company.

The Owensboro Art Guild is Kentucky’s oldest continuing visual arts organization operated by artists and sponsors a variety of exhibition opportunities throughout the year. In addition to the annual juried exhibition presented at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, open exhibitions, wherein all entries are displayed, are also organized by the guild.  Monthly meetings featuring a wide variety of visual arts topics are held in the Kolok-Ralph Center on Kentucky Wesleyan College’s campus in Owensboro. 

The exhibition will be open during regular museum hours of noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the museum is free, although voluntary donations are suggested of $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12.  Access for physically challenged individuals is provided at the Atrium entrance in the 9th Street parking lot.
