OPDOWENSBORO, Ky. (1/16/20) — Owensboro Police Department reported investigating a suspicious circumstances complaint Wednesday in the 3800 block of Brentwood Drive, where an individual with the Kentucky Office of the State Fire Marshal was in the area checking for working smoke detectors.

Residents told officers they were concerned the individual may be impersonating a fire official to gain entry into the residence.

Through investigation, OPD confirmed this was legitimate activity and the individual was in fact an official with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Officer Andrew Boggess, OPD spokesman, said.

"Although this instance was legitimate, we ask all residents to be alert and to verify credentials for anyone going door to door before conducting business or allowing anyone to enter your residence," Boggess stated in a press release.

It is recommended residents contact a business directly to confirm they have a representative in the area and call dispatch at (270) 687-8888 if anyone suspects they are not legitimate.
