BowlingHOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (11/15/19) — Ebonite International Inc. will be closing its doors via a letter from the company today, the city of Hopkinsville reported.

The abrupt closure, without prior notice to employees, was announced earlier this afternoon.

The company employed about 171 people and has operated in Hopkinsville for 52 years.

“We are surprised to hear of the closing of Ebonite and the decision to terminate operations in Hopkinsville," Mayor Carter Hendricks stated. "We have been proud to be the home of Ebonite and their outstanding workforce. Ebonite will forever be a part of our rich history.”

City and county officials reported they are working closely with the West Kentucky Workforce Board to provide help and assistance to affected workers. While any business disruption is difficult, the mayor stressed that Ebonite employees are not alone and pledged the community will continue to work together.

“We pray for the employees and families impacted by this decision. Several local agencies have already initiated action to assist the Ebonite employees affected by this sudden announcement," Hendricks said. "Our office will share more information as it becomes available. We hope for a quick transition for those looking for work."

The privately owned company manufactures bowling balls and other related products. It is unknown whether operations in Tennessee and Colorado will be affected. Ebonite operates pro shops throughout the U.S., listing its headquarters in Hopkinsville, which manufactures most of the world's bowling balls.

Brunswick announced in a press release today it has acquired assests from Ebonite International Inc. including brands, trademarks and technologies. Brunswick is based in Michigan.
